Sunak celebrates the agreement with the EU for Northern Ireland

Euphoria seizes the British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, after renegotiating with the European Union the controversial Northern Irish Brexit protocol. Sunak assures that he restores and safeguards the sovereignty of the province, the main complaint of his detractors:

“I am delighted that yesterday we made a decisive breakthrough in our negotiations with the EU, we reached an agreement, the new Windsor framework which I think is an extraordinarily positive step for Northern Ireland and represents, as the European president herself said, a moment for us to move forward and resolve some of the difficulties of the past.”

We will have to wait to find out if something or someone takes away the illusion of the British head of government. The unionists (DUP) have not yet seconded the new protocol that, as they requested, lifts customs controls on most products arriving in Northern Ireland from other parts of the United Kingdom. In addition, it leaves the possibility of stopping the application of European legislation to certain products in the hands of the autonomous Parliament.

If the unionists and the hardest wing of the conservatives give their go-ahead, shared self-government can be resumed and relations between London and Brussels will have been rid of one of their biggest obstacles.
