Similarities and differences between the two games.

Minecraft Legends will be available for PC and Windows consoles on April 18, 2023. The strategy/action spinoff is the latest entry in the Minecraft franchise since Minecraft Dungeons debuted in May 2020.

While Legends undoubtedly takes place in the Minecraft universe, there are several aspects that set it apart from the sandbox nature of the base game. At the same time, the two titles share more than a few similarities.

When Minecraft Legends launches in mid-April, players will have a better understanding of the similarities and differences between the two games. However, now we can explore the points of comparison and contrast of what we know about Legends so far.

Similarities between Minecraft Legends and the base game

The first notable comparison between Minecraft Legends and the original game is its world. Both games feature procedurally generated worlds, with their own biomes and unique craft structures.

In Legends, this continues, as players explore Overworld and protect its citizens from the invasion of hostile boars that invade from the abyss. Furthermore, players will avoid the corruption of the Underworld and keep the overworld as beautiful as possible.

The same mobs that players find in Minecraft will also return in Legends. From passive mobs like villagers and animals to hostile ones like creepers and piglets. Minecraft creatures will be a big part of how Legends works, as players will control a hero who must unite the disparate mobs of the overworld to repel an invasion of boars.

Also, just like in the original game, Minecraft Legends players can gather vital resources and build forts to prepare for battle. Of course, obtaining these items and building platforms will be done in a different game environment, but Legends will stay true to the core Minecraft resource collection while this theme fits its gameplay mold.

Like the original game, Minecraft Legends will be available on multiple platforms and will feature cross-platform, cooperative, and competitive multiplayer. Together, players can team up to battle hordes of pigs or go head-to-head and try to take over the map for themselves. Cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes will remain separate.

Regardless, Minecraft Legends is available for Windows PC via Xbox Game Pass and Steam. It will also run on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4/5 and Nintendo Switch consoles.

Differences between Minecraft Legends and the base game

Although both games share a universe, Minecraft Legends takes a very different approach to gameplay.

Instead of being primarily a game focused on survival or building, Legends is an action/strategy title with a more defined story. Heroes can still build up to a certain point, but they will do so with a more tactical mindset. The game world is procedurally generated, but players will find themselves preserving it rather than using it to create creative structures and builds.

Gameplay in Minecraft Legends will primarily be from a third-person perspective, avoiding the original title’s ability to play in first-person. It may be necessary to help the heroes navigate chaotic battlefields and complete objectives.

Additionally, while Minecraft players can tame mobs to aid them in battle, Legends takes a more direct approach, allowing heroes to strategically lead their allies and followers into battle. Objective-based gameplay is much more prevalent in this spin-off, and micromanaging minions can be just as important as keeping a player’s character upright in the heat of battle.

A big difference between Minecraft Legends and the base game has to do with the mobs. While there will be many recognizable creatures familiar to Minecraft players, Legends will also introduce new variations and forms of the game’s mobs.

It’s like a Minecraft Dungeons spin-off. The title is an action/RPG dungeon crawler that features various mobs and bosses not found in the original game.

It’s also worth noting that while Minecraft Legends is accessible on various platforms, there is no confirmed Mac or iOS version of the game at this time. This is different from the original game, which can be played easily and efficiently on Apple platforms.

Mojang and Microsoft may confirm a MacOS port at some point in the future, but as of late March 2023, there is still no indication of that.
