Sexist violence does not stop growing in Mexico. Around 50.5 million women and girls over the age of 15 have experienced some type of violence throughout their lives, according to estimates by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi). This figure represents more than 70% of the population and shows an increase of four percentage points in relation to the 2016 data, according to the results of the National Survey on the Dynamics of Household Relationships (Endireh) 2021, presented this Tuesday.
In addition to femicide violence, which leaves more than 11 women murdered every day in Mexico, psychological violence is the most predominant, with 51.6%, followed by sexual violence, with 49.7%; physical, 34.7%, and economic and patrimonial, 27.4%, according to data from the survey conducted from October 4 to November 30, 2021. Regarding the results of 2016, the agency highlights that the The change between the two surveys is statistically significant for all types of violence.
Sexual violence is the one that has grown the most, at 8.4%. Half of the women and girls over the age of 15 have suffered from it. In addition, at least 41% of the women surveyed by Inegi were victims of sexual assault in childhood. The main aggressors have been uncles and cousins.
The most violent entities for women are the State of Mexico, with more than 78%, Mexico City, 76%, and Queretaro, 75%. On the other hand, the area in which women have experienced more violence throughout their lives is the community, in more than 45% of cases; it is followed by the couple relationship, in 39%, the school environment, 32%, and the work environment, 28%.
The report also generates results on the prevalence of violence in the last 12 months prior to the survey. Between October 2020 and October 2021, more than 42% of women faced at least one situation of violence. The highest was psychological, with 29.4%, followed by sexual, with 23.3%. In the same period, violence occurred in a higher percentage in the community sphere, in 22%; at work, 20.8%, in the couple relationship, 20%,7, and at school, 20.2%.
In addition, 5% of those surveyed perceived that the conflicts in their relationship began or increased during the coronavirus pandemic. In the family sphere, the figure rose to 8.5%.
Regarding vulnerable groups, 41% of women with some type of disability, and 14% of women over 60 years of age, experienced an episode of violence. While around 3.3 million women who speak an indigenous language have experienced violence throughout their lives. This year, there is an increase in the prevalence of violence against women who consider themselves indigenous and those who speak an indigenous language, the report highlights.
