The director of the Serbian Government Office for relations with Kosovo, Petar Petkovic, has accused the Kosovar authorities of having fomented “a very serious crisis” and has recognized that on Sunday night they were “on the verge of serious conflicts”.

“Last night we were one step away from serious conflicts. They planned to invade the north during the night to deal with the Serbs defending their gates, their right to survive and remain in (the autonomous province of) Kosovo and Metojia”, as Belgrade designates the separatist region of Kosovo, Petkovic explained at a press conference, according to the Beta agency.

At this point, the Serbian official took the opportunity to accuse the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, of telling “untruths” and accusing Serbia of wanting to destabilize the region. “These are lies. What would be our interest in doing that? We don’t want any problems in Kosovo and Metojia,” Petkovic said.

Tensions on the border escalated this Sunday when the Serbs erected barricades on the border in protest at the decisions of the Kosovar government on the implementation of measures to veto the use of Serbian identity documents and license plates in its territory and that came into force this Monday. Finally, Kosovo has extended the application of the law for one month.

In this sense, Petkovic has announced that Belgrade will continue to issue identity documents and license plates to Kosovo Serbs, alleging that “it does not violate any agreement” but that it respects “its Constitution and its laws”.
