The President of the Government, Pedro Sanchez, and the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, have certified this Tuesday the common front to advance in the MidCat project, the gas pipeline to carry gas from the peninsula to the heart of Europe, which Berlin publicly supported but which has with the reticence of the French president, Emmanuel Macron.
In joint statements after participating as a guest in a meeting of the Council of Ministers of the German Government, Sanchez has exhibited harmony with Scholz on energy matters and has recalled that the interconnection objectives between the peninsula and the rest of Europe set by the European Commission, being below 3 percent.
“I am very grateful for the shared vision that the German chancellor has on the need to speed up these interconnections,” Sanchez pointed out, followed by defending, without mentioning France, that the alternative to MidCat is to work on the gas pipeline that connects Spain and Italy.
“If they are not developed at the right pace, another interconnection between the Iberian Peninsula and Italy is also outlined in the RepowerEU European strategy,” he underlined.
