“There is an enigma of what happens to that body for almost 20 years that is lost, that appears, that disappears. It is a ‘thriller’ focused on the body after she dies”, says the interpreter and businesswoman (Coatzacoalcos, 1966) in a telephone conversation with EFE about the series, centered on the figure of a woman “full of contradictions”, like being dead and yet “full of life”.

“Santa Evita”, now available on the platforms of Star+ in Latin America, is a fiction based on the novel of the same title by the Argentine writer Tomas Eloy Martinez, published in 1995 and inspired by the death of the then first Argentine lady -from cancer at the age of 33 just seven decades ago today- and in the preservation and subsequent kidnapping and concealment of his body by soldiers opposed to Peronism.

A death used in “a thousand ways”

Hayek, executive producer of the series together with Pepe Tamez -both from the production company Ventanarosa- highlights the “merit” of this “wonderful” book of “grabbing a character about whom so much is known and finding a highly original way of telling the mystery” of the story of who was the second wife of President Juan Domingo Peron (1946-1955 and 1973-1974), who in the series, directed by Rodrigo Garcia and produced and co-produced by Non Stop, is played by the Uruguayan Natalia Oreiro.

“This event of her corpse shows us in many different ways the obsession of men to control and subjugate women many times through their bodies”, she emphasizes, convinced that in “Santa Evita”, composed of seven chapters and with a cast that is nourished by, among others, figures such as Ernest Alterio, Francis Orella and Dario Grandinetti, the different types of “obsession and control” over an “indomitable” woman are captured.

“It’s very interesting how he tells so many different points of view about it. There is also how everyone uses what he can for his political agendas. This death was used in a thousand ways. And also how this woman after death represents a danger, because her spirit definitely made people feel that things that were impossible are possible, ”she underlines.

On July 26, 1952, Argentina She was shocked by the death of Evita, whose charisma and passionate speeches, and her image, often clad in dresses from exclusive firms that idolized her, had already made her an icon.

In 1955, the soldiers who overthrew Peron, in their eagerness to erase all traces of Peronism, stole the body and, after a macabre journey, it was hidden for 16 years to prevent it from being venerated. It was not until 1971 that he was returned to the widower during his long exile in Madrid and for 46 years he has rested in the La Recoleta cemetery in Buenos Aires.

Life and death

But in addition to her death, the series also immerses herself in how Evita, known as “the standard-bearer of the humble” for her speech and measures in favor of the working classes, forged her legend since she was born in a rural area of ​​the province of Buenos Aires until she moved to the capital as a teenager to work as an actress, she met Peron and together, already in power, they made history.

“The public of Latin America not only will they love it, but they will also feel proud that this series has been made with a jewel of our literature and with this wonderful team that we put together, “ highlights the protagonist of films such as “Frida” (2002), for which she received an Oscar nomination for best actress.

The COVID-19 pandemic forced the production times of the series to be lengthened, the premiere of which is for Hayek “a highly anticipated moment”.

“Because we were going to start, the pandemic caught us, we started, it caught us again… these times have not been easy, and worst of all, what makes you more desperate, is that we are so proud of the series… .. that we couldn’t wait for it to come out”, he concludes.
