Russian gas continues to pass through Ukraine, warns Naftoga director

Despite the war, Russian gas continues to flow through the Ukraine. A paradox that can only be stopped when the EU completely ends its dependence on Russian energy.

This was stated by the executive director of the Ukrainian state energy company Naftogaz, Oleksiy Chernyshov, who spoke to Euronews during a visit to Brussels. The European Union has drastically reduced its gas imports from Russia, but some Central and Western European member states continue to obtain it through Ukrainian pipelines.

“In general, we must limit any additional income from Russia in the course of the war, but on the other hand, we must understand that some European countries cannot immediately refuse to use this gas. We welcome the initiative of the European Union to constantly reduce Russian gas consumption,” said Oleksiy Chernyshov. According to the director of Naftogaz, this depends on the EU countries since “they are the clients”.

In addition, the Ukrainian has stated that Ukraine’s main objective and biggest challenge is to stop importing gas and become self-sufficient. It also wants to become a net exporter and energy hub for the rest of Europe. “We plan to produce more gas internally and Naftogaz itself, as Ukraine’s largest energy company, will also produce 1 billion cubic meters of gas. And that could lead to a situation where Ukraine can meet its own needs with internal production. of gas. That is our main goal,” Chernyshov said.

In addition, the Ukrainian has assured that it must be done during this year, even if the war has not ended. “We have no other way. We must produce more, we must consume less, we must be more energy efficient. And we are getting closer to it. Ukraine can become an energy center for the European Union. We have the largest gas deposits in our country, with a capacity of 31 billion cubic meters, and we plan to use them both for Ukrainian needs and for those of European countries,” he defended.

Chernyshov is pressing Brussels to take advantage of Ukraine’s underground gas storage facilities and to offer the company more security guarantees… In times of war it is not easy for them to find investors and insurance.
