On the battlefield, Ukraine claims that the last 24 hours have been the deadliest of the war for Russian troops and claims to have killed more than 1,000 enemy soldiers, but the number is difficult to verify.
Meanwhile, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has warned that the weapons deliveries promised by the West could aggravate the conflict: “The United States and its allies are trying to prolong the conflict as long as possible. To do this, they have started supplying of offensive heavy weapons and have openly called on Ukraine to seize our territory. Such steps effectively draw NATO countries into the conflict and could lead to an unpredictable level of escalation.”
The last high-level visit to kyiv to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky was made by German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius. Berlin has announced that, together with the Netherlands and Denmark, it will supply Ukraine with 178 Leopard 1 main battle tanks of the previous generation.
These additional tanks, which were withdrawn from service by the German army two decades ago, will have to go through a modernization process.
Ukraine’s allies have promised a lot of weapons, but everything takes time. On the way from Spain are twenty M113 armored personnel carriers. They are being shipped by cargo ship from Bilbao to a NATO base in Tallinn, Estonia, and then driven to the Ukrainian border.
