Russia transfers Ukrainian children to start adoption processes

ANDt is an apparently idyllic image of these Ukrainian children displaced from the Donbas and other areas occupied by the Russian army.

In the images that you can see in this video, they arrive in Russia after being taken out of Ukraine to be handed over to Russian families and granted that nationality.

The President’s Commissioner Vladimir Putin for Children’s Rights defends it as an act of love towards orphaned children who have no one to care for them.

A report by the Investigative Journalism Network of European public television reveals that many of these children do have families and that they were taken to Russia deceived or without the consent of their relatives.

bill van esveldHuman Rights Watch Associate Director for Children’s Rights: “Not only is forcible removal a war crime, but wartime adoption of children is also totally against international law. But Russia changed its laws in May to allow these children to obtain Russian nationality. And that It’s happened in hundreds of cases.”

Injured children were also taken to filtration camps. Oleksander He came to one of them with his mother. They questioned her and she did not pass the screening process. “They didn’t even let us say goodbye”says Oleksandr. His grandmother passed by and she managed to get him back before they moved him. They have no news of his mother.

Another mother, Natalia, sent her daughter to a summer camp organized by Moscow-appointed authorities in Kozacha Lopan, one of the first occupied Ukrainian cities. Natalia was able to hug her daughter again Karina, but other children who were sent to that camp have not been seen since. He thinks the Russians want to keep them. “Because half of those who left have already asked for Russian passports and are staying there. From what I know, they are told that Ukraine no longer allows them to enter the country, but I don’t believe it.”

Ukraine says it’s a kind of genocide. The American lawyer specializing in human rights Reed Brody admits that this goes beyond a war crime: “The forcible transfer of children, as we see it, is clearly a war crime, but it is also a crime against humanity because it is being carried out on a widespread and systematic level, but also because it is being carried out in the context of crimes against humanity.”
