The Government of Russia has distanced itself this Thursday from the statements made by the acting Prime Minister of Italy, Mario Draghi, who has warned of possible Russian interference in the country’s internal politics, and has asked the Italians to “evaluate” their worked.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zajarova stressed that Moscow “has always considered Italy a sovereign and independent country.” “If others don’t see it that way, this has nothing to do with Russia,” she said, according to a ministry statement.

Thus, he has responded to the accusations about a possible attempt to destabilize Italian politics, now plunged into a new crisis after the resignation of Draghi, which has become effective after the president, Sergio Mattarella, accepted his resignation, the second in one week.

“The work of the Draghi government must be evaluated by the Italians”, he stated before emphasizing that Italy “should not depend on anyone”. “I don’t understand why there is an internal need to explain what is happening through arguments related to external factors,” she has said.

On Wednesday, Draghi stressed the need to “take measures to combat the interference of Russia and other autocracies in internal politics and Italian society” during a speech before the Senate in which he asked the parties to join forces to guarantee their continuity and that of the Government in office.

“Italy is a free and democratic country, so we have to respond to those who want to seduce us with an authoritarian model in order to reinforce European values,” he said.
