Russia advances in Bakhmut and prepares its defenses for the counteroffensive

Ukraine and Russia are fighting relentlessly in the east for control of Bakhmut. Meanwhile, Russia prepares its defense along hundreds of kilometers between the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions to face the Ukrainian counteroffensive. According to leaked Pentagon documents, Ukraine is preparing a counteroffensive for the end of April, but the Ukrainian president acknowledges that there is no fight possible without the arrival of Western weapons.

“It is very important to understand that every time we hear that the promised supply of weapons is delayed and every time there are doubts about the type of weapons, their range or other quality characteristics, it implies that Ukrainian soldiers are giving their lives so that let’s have this time,” Zelensky said in a statement.

The spokesman for the Russian defense ministry has declared that its troops have gained control of two more blocks of the city of Bakhmut, 9 in total since Friday. In addition, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who is touring Latin America, said in Brazil that President Vladimir Putin’s government seeks a lasting solution to the conflict, but blamed the West and NATO for the conflict.

“It is clear that we are interested in ending the Ukrainian conflict as soon as possible. And our goals in this regard are, above all, to ensure that there are no threats to the military security of the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine,” Lavrov said in Brazil.

This Monday, a former mercenary from the Wagner Group denounced having received orders to kill Ukrainian civilians, including teenagers, according to the organization Gulagu.net, which denounces abuses in Russian prisons. Zelensky’s cabinet demands punishment for these war crimes.

In addition, the Cabinet of the Government of Ukraine warns of the danger of mines, a threat that affects a third of the territory and that has killed 758 civilians.
