Ron DeSantis Suspends Voter-Elected Prosecutor Who Refused to Prosecute Abortions

Miami- The Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantissuspended yesterday, Thursday, a state prosecutor who promised not to prosecute cases related to the recent abortion ban after 15 weeks in this southern state of the United States.

Hillsborough County State Attorney Andrew Warren also expressed his support for gender reassignment treatments for minors.

“State prosecutors have a duty to prosecute crimes as defined by Florida law, not to choose which laws to enforce based on their personal agenda,” DeSantis said in a statement.

DeSantis, a rising figure within the Republican Party who is running for re-election in November of this year, appealed to the powers granted by the state Constitution to suspend Warren, a member of the Democratic Party who was elected by voters in that county in 2016 and re-elected in 2020.

In his replacement, DeSantis has appointed State Attorney Susan Lopez, a Hillsborough County judge.

“People need to understand. This is not the governor trying to suspend an elected official. This is the governor trying to overthrow democracy here in Hillsborough County.”Warren said during a press conference.

The prosecutor said that the governor’s decision means “annulling” the vote of the population and, in addition, specified that until its suspension, which is for an indefinite period of time, no case related to the new state law on abortion had come to his office. Florida.

On July 1, a new state law came into force in this state that prohibits abortion after fifteen weeks of pregnancy, with exceptions such as the mother’s life being in danger if the procedure is not performed. Exceptions do not include cases of rape or incest.

Florida does not have laws that punish gender change treatments between minors.

“Our government is a government of laws, not a government of men,” DeSantis said during a press conference in Tampa, in the west of the state, surrounded by police authorities.

The Republican, whose name is being called as a possible candidate for the Presidency in 2024, stated that the position of prosecutor Warren was “below the standard of the Florida Constitution.”

In a statement, the chairman of the Florida Democratic Party, Manny Diazlamented the suspension of Warren, “an exceptional public official”, and said that this “offensive manifestation of power” made by DeSantis is a political game that puts public safety at risk.

“It is in line with DeSantis’ record of stripping freedoms from Floridians: women, duly elected local government and school officials, private individuals and businesses, or anyone else who would simply dare to disagree with him,” it added.
