Puerto Rican hurdler Yan Manuel Vazquez advances to the final and sets the U-20 national record at the World Cup in Cali

National Junior Athlete Yan Manuel Vazquez managed to qualify for the final of the 400 meter hurdles Cali 2022 U-20 World Athletics Championships and established a national record for that category by winning the first semifinal series with a time of 50.37 seconds.

The final is scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, at 5:45 pm, Puerto Rico time. The best performance to date in a U-20 World Cup was recorded by Wesley Vazquez, who came fourth in the 800 meters in the 2012 Barcelona edition with a time of 1:45.29, recalled sports historian Carlos Uriarte.

In fact, Vazquez’s time is the sixth best among Puerto Rican athletes. He is only surpassed by Javier Culson with 47.72, Jamele Mason (48.89), Eric Alejandro (49.07), Domingo Cordero (49.12) and Ramfis Vega (49.94). The previous junior national record was held by Derick Diaz at 50.59, set in 2015.

In global terms, Vazquez’s time was the fifth best record among the eight finalists. The best was the Jamaican Roshawn Clarke, with 49.35. He was followed by the Qatari Ismail Doudai Abakar (49.48), the Slovenian Matic Ian Gucek (49.72) and the Turkish İsmail Nezir (50.12).

The others classified are the Belgian Mimoun Abdoul Wahab (50.45), the Frenchman Sonny Gandrey (50.59) and the Japanese Soujiro Moritaka (50.62).

Likewise, the women’s quartet of 4×100 meters set a national record for the category with a record of 46.12 seconds. The team is made up of Legna Echevarria, Frances Colon, Darelis Dominguez and Karina Franceschi. The youngsters placed fifth in the first heat and failed to advance to the final.
