The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, has ordered this Thursday the Army and the Police to protect the Amazon jungle, considering it a matter of national security.
“To the military leadership present here, to the Army Forces, the Air Force, the Police, I am going to give you an order, saving the Amazon jungle is a matter of national security and human security,” said the Colombian president. , in statements collected by the local media.
Petro has made these statements during his visit to the Amazon region, where he has explained his strategy to save the jungle. “I ask you, first of all, to capture the large predators of the Amazon jungle. It is an order”, he has expressed before recommending the agents to use all possible instruments “so that any fire can be extinguished”.
Along these lines, the president has stressed the importance of the Amazon rainforest both for the Latin American country and for the rest of the world. “If the Amazon forest ends, it would cause humanity to reach a point of no return where it would no longer be possible to save ourselves. All the water in Colombia, up to the one that reaches the Caribbean Ocean, originates fundamentally in this forest that surrounds us,” has explained.
Therefore, “the crime is so great in terms of endangering the existence of all humanity that they must be captured,” Petro reiterated.
