Paris already adds 10 days of protests against the pension reform

The French once again took to the streets of Paris and other large cities in the country, in the tenth day of national strike.

Almost two weeks after the approval by the Government of the controversial pension reform, the unions continue with their protests, with no intention of giving up.

About 740,000 people participated in the movements this Tuesday, according to data from the Ministry of the Interior. 27 people were arrested.

“Tensions have skyrocketed here, in the center of Paris,” explains our special envoy, Anelise Borges. “Protesters have been burning rubbish bins and scooters, building barricades to prevent riot police from approaching this side of the avenue.”

“Two large groups of riot police are on each side of this avenue and have been using tear gas to try to disperse the protesters. 13,000 agents were deployed throughout the country, more than 5,000 in the French capital alone”.

“But that didn’t help to calm things down,” recalls our colleague, “quite the opposite. Many here are saying that this is no longer just about the reform of the pension system, but about inflation, the high cost of life, climate inaction and a series of policies of the administration of Emmanuel Macron against those they say they are against”.

“This is a very difficult situation for the administration of the French presidency to handle,” concludes Borges. “And the protesters are already calling for another march here in Paris for Thursday of next week.”
