The Palestinian Authority announced this Thursday the renewal of its diplomatic initiative to become a full member of the United Nations, after the General Assembly of the organization approved in 2012 to upgrade its status to non-member observer state.

The permanent observer of Palestine to the UN, Riyad Mansur, explained in an interview granted to the Voice of Palestine radio station that contacts have been initiated “at the highest levels” to try to achieve full recognition to save the two-state solution.

Thus, it has pointed to actions at the political and diplomatic level in coordination with several heads of state, including the presidents of the United States and France, Joe Biden and Emmanuel Macron, respectively, and King Abdullah II of Jordan, according to the report. Palestinian news agency WAFA.

Macron himself stressed last week that “there is no alternative” to a revival of the peace process between Israelis and Palestinians and advocated the start of “direct political dialogue” to try to reach an agreement for a “just and lasting” peace.

Macron, who received the president of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, in Paris, opted to “work together with partners of good will to reopen a credible political horizon.” Days earlier, Abbas had met with Biden in Bethlehem, as part of the US president’s tour of the Middle East.

In this way, Mansur explained that the objective is “that Palestine does not continue to be hostage to the actions of the Israeli occupation” and has defended the importance of the international community “assuming its responsibilities when it comes to protecting the Palestinian people and preserve the two-state solution” in the face of Israel’s “apartheid policies”.

On November 29, 2019, the UN General Assembly approved granting the status of a non-member observer state, a vote that resulted in the support of 138 of the 193 countries that are part of the Assembly. Likewise, there were nine votes against and 41 abstentions.
