MADRID, Sep. 23 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The number of counterfeit euro banknotes detected in Spain in 2021 was 56,389 units for an amount of 2.15 million euros, which represents 17 counterfeit banknotes for every million legitimate euro banknotes in circulation, according to data published today by the first time by the Bank of Spain on its website.

This figure represents 5.7% less than the previous year and confirms the downward trend registered since 2015 –with the only exception of 2019–. Thus, the statistics show how the number of counterfeit euro banknotes detected in Spain has been progressively reducing from 88,200 counted in 2015 to 56,389 counted in 2021, following the trend of what happened outside the country’s borders, according to data collected by the European Central Bank.

By denomination, in Spain the 20-euro note was the most counterfeited last year, since it represented 38% of the total detected, followed by the 50-euro note, with 31%.

As for coins, in 2021 just under 8 counterfeit euro coins were detected in Spain for every million legitimate euro coins in circulation, almost all of them 2 euros (94.6% of the total).

This figure is slightly lower than that recorded for the total counterfeit coins detected in the world (below 10 counterfeit euro coins per million legitimate euro coins in circulation), according to data from the European Commission.
