Montenegro | Interview with Jakov Milatovic, presidential candidate

Djukanovic against Milatovic. This will be the second round of the presidential elections in Montenegro on April 2. The current president, the veteran Milo Djukanovic, won the first round with 35% of the votes, compared to 29% for Jakov Milatovic, 37, former Minister of Economy, and candidate of the EUROPE NOW! movement, who spoke with Euronews on this exclusive interview.

Does the revelation arrive in Montenegro?

“I was three years old when Mr. Djukanovic entered politics in Montenegro. Enough is enough. I think the time has finally come to put an end to this policy, which was not good, which in recent years has been the policy that we It divided us, which made us even poorer and why many people left Montenegro. More than 100,000 people left Montenegro during the government of Milo Djukanovic.”

The battle against corruption

Milatovic could win in the second round, according to polls. In his campaign he insisted on the fight against corruption and economic reforms. And although he came in second, the sum of the opposition votes gives him a serious chance of becoming Montenegro’s future president on April 2.

The former Minister of Economic Development in the government of former Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapic, was formed after the victory in the 2020 parliamentary elections.

a circumstantial leader

At first, Milatovic was not even going to be a candidate for the movement, but when the candidacies for president of “Europe Now” were presented, Milojko Spajic was disqualified for having, in addition to Montenegrin, Serbian citizenship.

For Jakov Milatovic, his victory, if he wins the presidency, will be the victory of all: “This victory will be sealed on April 2 and it is the victory of a free Montenegro, of a more beautiful, rich and just Montenegro. It is the victory of all of us”.

Towards a way out of the institutional crisis

In Montenegro, after the April presidential elections, parliamentary elections will be held on June 11, which will largely depend on the result of the presidential elections. The Montenegrins hope that the country will emerge from the institutional crisis in which it has found itself for two years due to the instability of the Government.
