Mixed reactions from Republicans and Democrats to the historic process against Trump

Republican and Democratic lawmakers have posted on social media their conflicting views on the historic judicial process formally initiated this Tuesday against former president Donald Trump, a situation that has also provoked reactions from the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele.

Supporters of the former president raised their voices to express anger over the allegations and show their support for Trump. “Pray for President Trump. Pray for our country. This is awful.” tweeted Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, one of the most visible faces of the far-right wing of the Republican Party in Congress.

“The prosecution is not only frivolous, this political persecution marks a dark day for our country,” public on Twitter for his part, the Republican Senator for Texas, Ted Cruz.

The also legislator and ally of Trump, Marco Rubio, coincided in that this Tuesday is “a bad day for all of us” and assured that the country is going to “repent for a long time.”

On the other side of the spectrum, New York Democratic Representative Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez reacted to Trump’s posts on her Truth Social network about the judge who will hear his case. “Let’s be very clear: intimidation and stochastic terror are the core tools of Trump and the fascist movements that support him,” she tweeted.

“They trust it to dodge the consequences and silence others, and every time it works, they get more brazen. It’s one of the reasons why accountability is so important,” said Ocasio-Cortez, who also applauded the reaction of New Yorkers who booed Taylor Greene during a pro-Trump rally near Manhattan Criminal Court.

More conciliatory, the leader of the Democratic majority of the US Senate, Chuck Schumer, assured that he believed “that Donald Trump will have a fair trial that adheres to the facts and the law.”

“There is no place in our justice system for any outside influence or intimidation in the legal process. As the trial progresses, protest is an American right, but all protests must be peaceful,” the New York senator said.

Biden avoids speaking out and Bukele throws darts

The unprecedented event, the first criminal accusation against a former US president, has attracted public attention inside and outside the US. The media have camped both outside the Manhattan Criminal Court, where the former president pleaded not guilty on Tuesday, and outside his residence in Florida.

But while the world seems to have turned its gaze back to the former US president, his successor, Joe Biden is pursuing his agenda as usual.

The president “will catch up on the news when he has a moment, but this will not be his focus for today,” Biden Administration press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said during the usual afternoon briefing with the press at the White House.

“Our attention right now is on the American people and we are simply not going to comment on any ongoing proceedings,” the spokeswoman added in a typical response when asked about open court cases.

On the other hand, the president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, reacted with a tweet in English to the process against Trump and mentioned the upcoming presidential elections in the US, for which the former president already had announced his candidacy as a Republican candidate.

Although he has hinted at it, Biden has yet to confirm that he will run for re-election.

“Think what you want about former President Trump and the reasons why he is impeached. But imagine if this happened in any other country, where a government arrested the main opposition candidate. The ability of the US to use ‘democracy’ as a foreign policy is gone,” wrote Bukele, who recently already He starred in a disagreement on Twitter with his Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro.
