Mexican Senate official freed in Veracruz

Mexico's Ambassador

The technical secretary of the Political Coordination Board of the Mexican Senate, José Manuel del Río Virgen, was released on Friday night after spending six months detained in a prison in the state of Veracruz for his alleged connection with the murder of a mayoral candidate in that state, a case that sparked friction within the ruling party.

A court of this state with coastline on the Gulf of Mexico decided not to indict Del Río Virgen for the murder of Remigio René Tovar, mayoral candidate of the town of Cazones, and ordered his release in compliance with an injunction approved by a judge for lack of evidence and which a collegiate court of the entity confirmed the day before.

Tovar was shot to death near his residence two days before the regional elections of June 6, 2021. The candidate’s former campaign manager, Omar Ramírez, and another man identified as Gustavo N. were arrested for the case.

Justice takes time but it comes, Del Río Virgen told the press as he left the Pancho Viejo prison in Veracruz, accompanied by family and friends who received him with applause and shouts.

The official, who considers himself a politically persecuted person, indicated that he hopes that justice will be done in Tovar’s case and that the authorities of Veracruz will not look for scapegoats.

Among those who celebrated the release was pro-government senator Ricardo Monreal, president of the Political Coordination Board in the Senate, who declared on his Twitter account: poor Veracruz, so far from justice and so close to authoritarianism. Let’s keep fighting for the hundreds of innocent people in prison; today we celebrate just one step.

Monreal announced that Del Río Virgen will return to office next week.

After the arrest of his collaborator, Monreal “who is also the coordinator of the ruling National Regeneration Movement (Morena) in the upper house_, stepped up his criticism against the governor of Veracruz, Cuitláhuac García Jiménez, a member of the same political organization.

Veracruz attorney general, Verónica Hernández, said in a statement that the injunction does not exonerate Del Río Virgen as probably responsible in the case of Tovar, and defended the detention measure ordered last year against the politician.

The resolution issued by the collegiate court does not prevent the Attorney General’s Office from continuing to exercise its attributions until those responsible for the murder of Remigio Tovar are punished, said Hernandez.
