Hundreds of thousands of people marched this Sunday in Madrid in a new protest to defend the public health system in the region that is home to the Spanish capital, weighed down for months by lack of personnel and resources.

The protest brought together 250,000 people according to the authorities and close to half a million according to the organizers, who asked for “more resources” from the autonomous government of Madrid, accused of favoring private providers to the detriment of the public health system.

The march in defense of “100% public, universal and quality health” and against the health policy of the Government of Díaz Ayuso -the one that invests the least in this of all the regional Executives despite being the richest community- was the most massive in recent years in the Spanish capital.

Simultaneously, there were also marches in different cities in Spain in defense of the public health system.

The protesters, among whom there were numerous employees of the health sector, met at different points in Madrid with drums and whistles with the aim of reaching the municipality with banners with the slogan “Health is not sold, it is defended”. .

“In Spain, public health was very good, but it has deteriorated a lot lately, especially since the pandemic,” said Ana Santamaría, a Madrid resident who attended the march with her friend Susana Bardillo.reported the AFP news agency.

For Bardillo, now you have to wait weeks to get a primary care appointment.

“With this, hospitals are saturated, because in the end people go to the emergency room”explained and affirmed that this generates mistreatment that affects both professionals and patients.

Díaz Ayuso, one of the emerging figures of the PP who obtained an absolute majority in the Madrid regional elections in May 2021, announced that he wants to promote video consultations and telemedicine, in addition to promoting the role of nurses to solve health problems in the Madrid region, the richest in Spain.

This demonstration is the third major event in less than three months in the Spanish capital. The first protest was held on November 13 and the second on January 15.

Since November 21, doctors from the Madrid public system have been on indefinite strike demanding better working conditions, a lower patient load and salary increases.

Dissatisfaction with the shortcomings of the health system affects several regions of Spain, a decentralized country where the regional authorities manage issues such as health. But it is in Madrid, where the right-wing Popular Party group incarnated by the harsh leadership of Díaz Ayuso governs, where the protest movement is strongest.
