The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, has summoned this Thursday to an inter-ministerial crisis unit in the Home Office by the violent riots that have taken place in several cities of the country after the French Police shot dead a 17-year-old boy in Nanterre.
Macron, who has just returned from his trip to marseillewill go to the Beauvau Palace, headquarters of the country’s Interior portfolio, at 08:00, reports the BFMTV chain.
Minutes earlier, the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, reported that at least 150 people had been arrested, while denouncing “a night of unbearable violence against symbols” of the country, such as town halls, police stations and schools.
«I support the police officers, gendarmes and firefighters who bravely show their faces. Shame on those who did not call for calm», has indicated the holder of the portfolio, who has closely followed the situation throughout the night from his office.
French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne on Wednesday called for calm and assured that “justice will be done”, since the police intervention “did not conform to the rules of action.” In the morning, Macron had mentioned an “inexplicable” and “inexcusable” act.
Following these statements, the founder of La Francia Insumisa (LFI), Jean-Luc Mélenchon, asked for justice and criticized the words of the Government: «The watchdogs order us to call for calm. We ask for justice, withdraw the legal action against poor Nahel -the deceased young man- and suspend the murderous cop and his accomplice who ordered him to shoot.”
Protests have erupted after a 17-year-old boy received a shot at a police checkpoint, after the interception of his vehicle. The agent responsible, who will remain in custody until Wednesday, has stated in a first hearing that he acted “in self-defense.” After the death of the adolescent, the Police denounced an attempted run over, although a video has denied this version.
