The former president of Brazil and candidate for the presidential elections for the Workers’ Party (PT), Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, has asserted that the country’s military are “more responsible” than the current president, Jair Bolsonaro, and would not allow a coup if he loses the elections.

“How can we think of a coup? I don’t think the Armed Forces will accept this: I don’t think Brazilian society allows it. I don’t think so. This citizen (referring to Bolsonaro), if he starts playing with Democracy, will pay a very high price,” Lula defended in an interview for UOL.

On the other hand, the former president has asserted that he does not intend to run for re-election if he finally emerges victorious in the presidential elections scheduled for October 2, which would break the trend that all heads of state have set since redemocratization. of the country in the mid-1980s.

“I want to fulfill the best mandate that I have done in my life. And I want to work in four years for 40”, Lula has pointed out in reference to the more than 80 years he will be in 2026, once his hypothetical mandate ends if he finally wins victory in the October elections.

In the most electoral aspect, Lula has defended a change in the policy of readjusting the minimum wage, which would vary annually based on the Gross Domestic Product and not according to inflation, as is currently the case.

Likewise, he has defended that he will reopen some of the ministries closed by his successors –Michel Tremer and Bolsonaro himself–, highlighting among them the Ministries of Culture and Fisheries. “We are going to create those ministries that are necessary,” he has settled.

The PT of Brazil made official last week the presidential candidacy led by former president Lula, who will count on the former governor of Sao Paulo Geraldo Alckmin as a candidate for vice president in the October elections.

Despite the fact that it has been delayed longer than originally planned, it was an open secret that Lula would present himself as the main favorite to succeed Bolsonaro since the Brazilian Justice restored his political rights after his imprisonment.

This will therefore be the sixth time that Lula has stood for election. Previously, he prevailed in 2002 and 2006, while he was defeated in 1989, 1994 and 1998. Now, the PT leader leads the voting intention polls and some of the most optimistic ones place him close to winning even in the first lap.
