Lopez Obrador defends Trump: “I do not agree with what they are doing to him”

The president of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, expressed his solidarity this Wednesday with the former president of the United States. Donald Trump is going through one of the most difficult moments of his political career. This Tuesday he was indicted by the New York Supreme Court judge, who accused him of 34 counts of falsehood derived from his efforts to buy the silence of several people before and after the 2016 elections. Lopez Obrador sees similarities between what happened to him him and what is happening to Trump in the present.

“I reiterate and maintain my position that legal matters, supposedly legal matters, should not be used for electoral political purposes. That is why I do not agree with what they are doing to him, ”said the president of Mexico this morning, resorting to the same version of Trump. In recent days, the former US president has dedicated himself, without providing any evidence, to exposing the alleged partiality of the judge and the prosecutors who are in charge of his charges. “The only crime I have ever committed has been defending our country from those who try to destroy it,” he told supporters back at his Florida home, where he has resided since leaving office.

Despite the criticism he has received for his words in defense of Trump, Lopez Obrador assures that he feels identified because he has already gone through the same thing. “It is that I already suffered it, that they disregarded me because they did not want me to appear on the ballot as a candidate for the presidency, that was the bottom of everything,” he said. The president goes back to a case that took place between 2004 and 2005, when he was Head of Government of Mexico City. He then was subjected to an impeachment trial, for disregarding a judicial resolution and violating an amparo issued by a judge in favor of the El Encino property. Lopez Obrador has always used this event to accuse the political corruption of which he was a victim.
