Less attacks around Bakhmut this week

The overall pace of Russian operations in Ukraine appears to have slowed compared to previous weeks, according to the ISW. But there are further indications that the conflict between the Russian Defense Ministry and the leader of the Wagner Group has probably reached its climax.

Wagner’s general offensive on Bakhmut seems to be reaching its culmination. Ukrainian military sources have noted a noticeable decrease in the number of attacks in and around Bakhmut, especially in recent days.

Yevgeny Prigozhin claimed that he captured Zalizianske, a village 9 km northwest of Bakhmut. The ISW says: This indicates that Wagner’s forces are probably carrying out opportunistic attacks further north of Bakhmut, places are smaller and easier to take.

Russian forces continued offensive operations in the western Donetsk region, specifically near Vuhledar, 30 km southwest of the city of Donetsk.

Although the British Ministry of Defense claims that, over the past week, Russian attempts to storm the town of Vuhledar in the Donetsk region have almost certainly subsided. This comes after repeated and extremely costly failed attacks over the previous three months.

Given that Russia’s only notable recent tactical success has been in the Bakhmut sector, dominated by the mercenary forces of the Wagner Group, there is a realistic possibility that the Russian Defense Ministry will persist in its drive for success at Vuhledar so that compete with Wagner’s achievements.
