Lavrov visits Venezuela to counter the influence of the West

The Russian Foreign Minister calls for unity in Caracas to counter blackmail from the “West”. These have been the words of Sergei Lavrov during his visit to Venezuela as part of his tour of Latin America. The country’s president, Nicolas Maduro, received the Foreign Minister, with whom he held a meeting at the headquarters of the presidency, the Miraflores Palace. Maduro has described the meeting on Twitter as a “pleasant meeting that consolidates bilateral relations” between the two countries.

“Together with our Venezuelan friends, we speak from a united position in defense of the right of peoples to determine their own future, their destiny without external interference, without dictates or blackmail. And without, of course, attempts to influence them through measures unilateral and illegal restrictive measures now practiced by the collective West”.

This is the second stop of Lavrov’s tour, which began in Brazil and plans to go through Cuba and Nicaragua. As he did during his meeting with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in Brasilia, Lavrov has insisted that Russia wants to end the conflict in Ukraine, but under the parameters of the UN Charter and not those of the “West”.
