Zelensky calls to punish Russian aggression to prevent other wars

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky on Tuesday urged the international community to act against armed conflicts before they break out, recalling the anniversary of the war launched by Russia against Georgia in 2008. Given that prevention mechanisms are not always They work, as happened with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Zelenski is committed to “punishing” the aggressor States by making them lose what they have conquered and bringing them to justice, so that they serve to prevent future conflicts.

Zelensky does not want any latent or “frozen” conflict to remain “after this Russian war against Ukraine”. For this, the Ukrainian president defends that “Ukraine must recover everything that Russia temporarily conquered and the aggressor State must be punished”. “Only the explicit defeat of the aggressor, the loss of everything captured and his international legal responsibility for the aggression are safeguards against any war,” concluded the president in his daily video to the population.

That is what the Ukrainian government and diplomacy are working on, Zelensky said. “We are all working to organize a global political and economic response to Russian aggression. By protecting our state, we automatically protect anyone who has been or may be threatened by a terrorist state,” he noted.

It went even further, asking for sanctions before possible aggressions when it is clear that these are likely to occur. “If it is already clear that some State is preparing an unjust, unprovoked, illegal aggression, then the world’s reaction to its preparation should be the same as to the aggression that actually occurred. It is necessary not to wait [a que se produzcan] blows and victims, but to act to prevent war,” he assured.

Recalling the anniversary of the Russian war against Georgia in 2008, the Ukrainian president stated that, although it is necessary to talk about what happened, it is not as important as discussing what can be done in the moments before the start of a war to avoid let it begin.

“2008, 2014, 2022… The wars that started in these years have a different scale and nature,” but something in common about their origin: “regional and global security mechanisms did not work,” Zelensky said. “Only now has the world begun to realize the need for real and effective tools to prevent such assaults and bring perpetrators to justice.”
