Julia Roberts reveals that Martin Luther King paid the bill for her birth

Julia Roberts (Georgia, USA, 55 years old) has been part of the lives of many for years: since she starred in blockbuster films in the 1990s such as beautiful woman either My best friend’s Wedding, which earned her the nickname of being “America’s sweetheart”, until appearing in television commercials and becoming one of the highest rated (and paid) actresses in Hollywood. Although it seems that everything about her life is known, many details are missing, also in part because she has always been very jealous of her private life and the details that she shares of her family life. But the last of them has been revealed by the actress herself: the very activist Martin Luther King Jr. paid the costs of her birth, on October 28, 1967.

Last September, the interpreter participated in an interview with the writer, journalist and television presenter Gayle King for HistoryTalks, some talks organized by the History channel. And a fragment of that conversation has now emerged. In it, the actress tells that after her birth, her parents – who ran a theater school in Atlanta and suffered financial hardship – could not afford the hospital bill. It was Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife, Coretta Scott King, who paid the full amount: “They couldn’t afford it. The King family helped us out of a tight spot.” A figure, yes, that the interpreter does not specify.

The friendship between both families began in the sixties of the last century. “One day, Coretta called my mother and asked her if her children could be part of the school because they were having difficulty finding a place that accepted her children,” the renowned interpreter recalled in the talk. At that time, in the United States there were continuous episodes of racial segregation and nobody wanted to admit the Kings to their schools. However, Roberts’ mother did not hesitate to accept the little ones in the family and thanks to this they became friends. After recounting the story, the space presenter thanks the gesture of Roberts’ parents: “In the sixties you didn’t see black children interacting with white children and your parents told them: ‘Come here’. I think that’s extraordinary and it laid the foundation for who you are as a person,” she tells the actress.

Following the Kings’ entrance as students at the Roberts’ drama school, a Ku Klux Klan member blew up a car in front of the building’s entrance. A terrorist act that was carried out because Yolanda King, the eldest daughter of the couple, was chosen to be the protagonist of one of the plays in which she had to dramatize a love affair with a white actor.

News that Martin Luther King took care of the hospital bill broke shortly after the Hollywood star’s 55th birthday. Although it was the actress herself who related this fact a month ago in a talk organized by the History channel, this conversation has come to light because the strategic adviser to former President Barack Obama, Zara Rahim, has published a fragment on her Twitter account. Confirming the story, Martin and Coretta’s youngest daughter, Bernice King, also tweeted that part of the chat. “Grateful that Julia Roberts shared this story with Gayle King and that so many people have been in awe of her. I know the story well, but I am moved to remember the generosity and influence of my parents.”

Roberts was the third daughter of a marriage from the southern United States. Both she and her siblings, Eric and Lisa, inherited what Julia’s mother called “the family disease”: the gift of acting. In 1971, the couple divorced.

Now, the actress is one of the most recognized interpreters worldwide. She began her career in the world of professional cinema in 1988 with the character of Daisy Arujo in the comedy Mystic Pizza. A year later she won her first Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film steel magnolias (1989). It could be said that 1990 was the definitive leap for him with beautiful woman. And although she has since been nominated for an Oscar four times, she has only won one, with Erin Brockovich (2000). She is now immersed in the promotion of her latest film with George Clooney, journey to paradise.
