Iran to pardon “significant number” of protesters

As a show of compassion and forgiveness for the commemoration of the 44th anniversary of the triumph of the Islamic Revolution in Iran towards the participants in the protests that have shaken the country in recent months, yesterday the Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, announced an amnesty for a large number of these people convicted of participating in anti-regime demonstrations.

The ayatollah accepted a proposal from the country’s Judiciary to “pardon or reduce the sentence of a significant number” of those accused and convicted for their participation in the protests. Khamenei thus took the proposal made by the head of the Judiciary, Gholamhosein Mohseni Ejei, who explained to him by letter that “a notable number of these inmates repent of their crimes and have asked for forgiveness after the disclosure of the plots hatched by foreign enemies and the anti-revolutionary and anti-popular currents».

In accordance with the terms stipulated by the Judiciary, those accused and convicted who “have not committed espionage, intentional homicide or injuries, or destruction of public property” would be deserving of said amnesty.

Among those who will not benefit are people accused of committing espionage on behalf of foreign interests or having direct contact with agents of foreign intelligence services; those arrested for intentional murder or injury or destruction of government, military and public installations, as well as those accused of other crimes such as banditry, arms trafficking and alcohol.

The amnesty has been granted on the occasion of the upcoming commemoration of the 44th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, on February 11, 1979 and follows article 110 of the Constitution that “grants the Leader the right to pardon or reduce the sentences of those convicted of recommendation of the Head of the Judiciary.

Iran pardons detainees every year on the anniversary of its revolution, which established the current system of clerical rule. Last year, he forgave the worth almost 3,400a smaller number than the “tens of thousands” that they advertise now.

It is estimated that 20,000 people have been arrested across the country since the start of the unrest, according to the activist news agency HRANA, although reporting restrictions make it impossible to verify the exact number. In addition, security forces have killed more than 500 protesters and authorities have issued at least 22 death sentences and charged more than 100 people with crimes that could carry the death penalty, according to the same agency.

Since the protests over the death in custody of the Moral Police of the young Kurdish Masha Amini began on September 16, the demonstrations in the streets have been decreasing in intensity in recent weeks, but not so the weariness and the calls for a change of government.

regime propaganda

“With the celebration of the 44th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution, the regime seeks to sell the story of stability and normality to the West. Again they ignore reality: political, generational and economic crisis. The East in the spotlight,” explains Daniel Bashandeh, an analyst and expert on the Middle East, for ABC. “It is probable that a phase of civil disobedience and insubordination will be entered, especially among the youngest as in key points such as the obligatory veil or public conduct,” the analyst points out.

This story of normality and strength on the part of the Khamenei regime is also being carried out with displays of popular support. This was seen last Friday in some images distributed by the supreme leader’s office with him surrounded by girls dressed in light-colored burkas.

The ayatollah took a bath of youth in an act known as the ‘Celebration of the Angels’, a ceremony that brings together Iranian girls where from then on they are old enough to wear a veil and be considered women.

A sign that Islamic values remain strong in the country, but, as Bashandeh points out, “little by little they are being threatened by the protests.”
