Iran says main obstacle to reviving nuclear deal is US ‘indecision’

The Government of Iran has affirmed this Friday that the main obstacle in the face of the reactivation of the 2015 nuclear agreement is the “indecision” of the United States, whose authorities it has branded as “disloyal”.

“The false dichotomy between the nuclear deal, to which Iran, unlike the United States, remains a party, and good relations between Iran and its neighbors, including Russia, does not hide the fact that the indecisiveness of the disloyal United States is the major obstacle to a deal,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Naser Kanani said.

“Our neighborhood policies do not depend on the nuclear agreement or the permission of the United States,” he said in a message posted on his official account on the social network Twitter.

Kanani’s words came after US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin warned Tehran that maintaining cooperation with Russia was “a really bad idea” after Washington accused Iran of planning to deliver drones to Moscow to support the invasion of Ukraine.

Iran, which has recalled that its cooperative ties with Russia predate the outbreak of war, signed a memorandum of understanding with a Russian energy giant on Tuesday to strengthen its ties in the oil and gas fields.

The talks for the return of the United States to the agreement and for Iran to return to the respect of its commitments were reactivated on November 29 in Vienna, including recent indirect contacts between Tehran and Washington in Qatar, although they ended without progress.

Iran has announced the withdrawal of its commitments on several of the points of the agreement after the United States left the pact unilaterally in 2018, although the Iranian authorities have defended that these steps can be reversed if the United States withdraws the sanctions and returns to the agreement.
