Las Vegas Review-Journal investigative reporter Jeff German was found dead Saturday morning in front of his home with stab wounds.

“The Review-Journal family is devastated by the loss of Jeff,” said Glenn Cook, the outlet’s executive editor. “He was the gold standard of the news business. It’s hard to imagine what Las Vegas would be like today without his many years of shining a bright light in dark places,” he added.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police (LVMPD) received a tip shortly after 10:30 a.m. local time, according to a news release. The emergency services confirmed the death of the victim at the scene of the crime.

The LVMPD Homicide Department is currently investigating the incident, which it has classified as a priority. “This brings together a variety of resources to maximize the investigative effort and apply a sense of urgency to the suspect’s arrest,” authorities said, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The director of the outlet has indicated that the journalist, who covered numerous stories related to organized crime, had not communicated any concern about his personal safety or any threat against him.

Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman has said she was surprised to learn of German’s death. “This was a senseless act of violence,” Goodman said. “The loss of life in this way is always shocking and must stop. We will closely monitor the police investigation,” she added.
