A high level of caffeine in the blood could reduce the amount of body fat a person has and their risk of type 2 diabetessuggests research published in the journal BMJ Medicine.

Lower weight and body fat

For the current work, the team relied on a relatively novel technique known as Mendelian randomization. It uses genetic variants as proxies for a particular risk factor, in this case caffeine levels in the blood, to obtain genetic evidence to support a particular outcome, in this study weight (BMI) and type 2 diabetes risk.

The researchers found 2 common genetic variants of the CYP1A2 and AHR genes in nearly 10,000 people. These genes are associated with the speed of caffeine metabolism in the body.

The results of the analysis showed that higher genetically predicted levels of caffeine in the blood were associated with a lower weight (BMI) and body fat. They were also associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes.

They found that almost half of the reduction in type 2 diabetes risk (43%) was due to weight loss. Being overweight is a major risk factor for this condition. Caffeine is known to speed up metabolism, increase fat burning, and reduce appetite. Items that could contribute to a lower weight.
