Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery has shown he’s not afraid to tweak his lines when he thinks he can get more out of them.

That trend continued on Boston’s defense during practice Wednesday. Dmitri Orlov was seen The first power play unit consisted of David Pastrnak, Brad Marchant, Jake DeBrusk, and Patrice Bergeron.

Charlie McAvoy is usually the first pick, but now Orlov, who has been a great fit with the Bruins since being traded to the Washington Capitals, will get a shot at first unit.

“Our power play has stalled. It’s flat, right? Montgomery told reporters at Warrior Ice Arena after practice. “If you look at the Bergeron unit, they have scored two goals in the last few, I don’t know how many games, and only one goal in the zone. It’s the first game since DeBrusk returned from injury. So we have an opportunity to experiment, so we are experimenting.

Montgomery also sees this as an opportunity for McAvoy to have more success in a second power play unit with Hampus Lindholm, David Krejci, Tyler Bertuzzi and Pavel Sacha.

“How does Charlie McAvoy win? He has had a lot of success hitting the right side in the offensive zone,” Montgomery told reporters. “If you look at all the plays he’s been playing in the last game, he’s coming down the right side, getting a pass, a one-time hitter. He’s a really dynamic player and we want to improve by putting him in situations where he can win.

The Bruins are 11 points ahead of the Carolina Hurricanes for second place in the NHL. They will continue to find ways to win games, but they know that sometimes the power play can make or break a game. If that part of the group is struggling, it’s best to experiment to see what works. After all, the Bruins are certainly in a position to shuffle before the Stanley Cup playoffs get closer.
