The Spanish international Usman Garuba assured that “it is obvious” that in this Eurobasket, the first without the Gasol brothers, “more is going to be demanded of everyone”, both from him and “from the whole team”, that they should no longer go ” from less to more” but “consistently in all games” to meet its objective.

“It is obvious that more is going to be demanded of all of us, me personally and the whole team. We are different players, we form a new group, we have the mentality of going day by day, competing and from there we are going to give everything”, declared the azudense in a press conference just one day before traveling to Georgia for the Eurobasket.

The Houston Rockets player believes that, unlike other times, the team cannot afford a hesitant start. “In this case, in this group, I think it’s different compared to other years. Instead of going from less to more, we have to be consistent in all the games because the rivals are strong and the crosses can be strong,” he said. .

In addition, he believes that Spain has to go “day by day” and focus on each game “as if it were the last” in order to achieve its goal, which is “to win games and improve day by day.”

In this edition of the Eurobasket, Spain is not among the first row of favourites, something that Garuba sees as positive because “it’s good not to have pressure”. However, he doesn’t think that should be confused with relaxation or low ambition.

“Spain always has pressure, it is always a team that competes, we fight, we always get medals, or almost always, but we always leave everything behind. This year we have a little less pressure and it can come in handy when it comes to working on certain things, not be so demanding, but that doesn’t mean we’re not going to give it our all and compete until the end”, he pointed out.

It also extends that thought to the fans, where a certain negativity is observed. “What the fans think in the end is their opinion, I have a different opinion, I think we’re a new team, but that doesn’t mean we’re pessimistic about each other. We have a positive mentality going game by game and we’re going to compete now give everything to be able to shut up those fans”, he argued.

Despite the fact that he arrived injured at the beginning of the preparation, he has been able to arrive well at the Eurobasket, where he is expected to be one of the benchmarks for the Spanish team. “I feel much better than at the beginning of my arrival, every day I have been improving and I only know that I feel better, the truth,” he explained.

In another order of things, Garuba assures that he has been “wanting to play with the national team for a long time” and that he has put “a lot to play for” in this Eurobasket. “After a year of injuries and not being able to play in the summer league, I insisted a lot to be able to play this European Championship and I want to thank the team, which in the end let me participate. It could be a great showcase for me”, he explained.

The center believes that “the lack of minutes this year” can be compensated for in the Eurobasket, something that can also “be good for him next season”, which will be his second season in the NBA.

Spain’s great rival in the group stage will be Turkey, which will have as one of its stars Alperen Sengun, Garuba’s teammate and with whom he also shares position, so the confrontation between the two will be special for the Spaniard.

“We’ve been talking about that game for a long time, nothing else came out of the calendar and the group. We’ve always wanted each other very much, since we were very young and it will be a great game, for sure”, commented the Azuda.
