Former Tunisian Parliament Speaker Arrested

In Tunisia, the leader of the Islamist party Ennahda and former speaker of Parliament, Rachid Ghannouchi, is arrested.

Members of Ennahda, a former parliamentary force, arrested or investigated

Security forces raided Ghannouchi’s home and transferred him to a detention center as part of a campaign to arrest prominent opposition figures. Especially members of Ennahda, who have governed directly and indirectly in the last decade and was the main parliamentary force during the last term, have been detained or investigated.

More than a dozen party members are in provisional prison for alleged crimes of corruption and conspiracy while others, like Ghannouchi, have open processes and have been summoned by the Justice on a regular basis.

The Tunisian Justice is investigating several cases about the role of former leaders, especially Islamists, in sending young combatants to conflict zones and, some of them, have been victims of arbitrary arrests and bans from traveling abroad.

The Human Rights Watch association for Human Rights denounced last week that President Kais Said is trying to silence the leaders of the Ennahda party and other opponents by accusing them of being terrorists.

Kais Said assumed full powers in July 2021 and suspended Parliament in which Ennahda was the main force during the last term.
