Five shot in New Orleans carnival parade

Five people were shot Sunday night, including a little girl, during the parade of Krewe of Bacchus in New Orleans, city police reported, saying a suspect was in custody.

In addition to the girl, a woman and three men were injured, who were all taken to hospital, according to local television station WWL-TV.

A police official, Hans Ganthier, said one of the victims was in critical condition, but did not specify which one.

“They were able to quickly apprehend the suspect we believe to be responsible for this,” Ganthier said.

Two weapons were recovered at the scene, it added. It was not clear if anyone else was involved.

“This is something we really didn’t want to see,” Ganthier said. “We really wanted this to be a safe Mardi Gras.”

The parade came to a temporary halt in the 1500 block of St. Charles Avenue after the shooting.

An official said the parade would go on.
