Jenni Hirikoski, a three-time Olympian and Finnish women’s hockey star, was hospitalized after a skate slashed her neck in a terrifying incident in the Swedish women’s hockey league on Sunday.

The Luella captain cut his neck on a skate late in the third period of the second game of the SDHL final against the Brains. The 35-year-old was rushed to hospital, although the Swedish women’s league is said to have taken 15 minutes to arrive. There is no need for an on-site ambulance, unlike the male SHL.

The game would eventually be delayed 30 minutes, with the players leaving the ice while the hosts awaited word on Hirikoski. Luella’s head coach Jens Själin told reporters after the game that the communication was immediate as the players returned to their dressing rooms during the delay knowing that the situation was stable.

“It was overwhelming,” Sjalin said in Swedish. “But it was great to get the news that we got.”

“All she knew was that she was in control and then (the team) wanted to play for her.” she added herself.

Later in the evening, Hirokoski took to Instagram to share that he was in good spirits, posting a photo of himself strapped to a hospital bed.

“Today I experienced a very terrible situation on the ice. But after the operation in the hospital I am fine and I was able to go home. I want to thank everyone who helped me on the ice and in the hospital. I am so grateful for everything you have done for me.

After a lengthy delay play resumed and Luella added an empty netter to seal the 5-3 win. The win gives Luella a 2-0 series lead and moves them within one game of winning the SDHL championship, which would mark the team’s fifth straight win.

In 31 regular season games, Hirigoski led all defensemen with 37 points. The Finnish national team captain is one of the most dynamic talents in women’s football, including two Olympic Best Defender awards in 2014 and 2018, three Olympic bronze medals and seven World Championship Best Defender awards.
