The swimmer Fernando Diaz del Rio won a historic silver medal for Spanish swimming this Friday by being the first male in a European Championships, in the discipline of ‘Technical Solo’, a test that premiered this year at the Rome event , venue of the contest.

Diaz del Rio, 19 years old, achieved a total score of 79.4951, and was only surpassed by the local swimmer Giorgio Minisini, who raised the count to 85.7003. The bronze went to Serbian Ivan Martinovic, far behind the Spanish, with 58.8834 points.

The young Canary, who defended his technical routine with Aerosmith’s ‘Dream on’, jumped into the pool with great authority and elegance. Fernando knew how to manage the moments of difficulty and finally certified a capital silver that becomes the first metal in history for Spanish artistic swimming for men.

This is the first time that this men’s competition was held in a European Championship and it did so with only three participants. In any case, this does not detract from the first medal for Spain in the event, waiting for the mixed duet and the rest of the modalities of women’s artistic swimming.
