EU adopts new sanctions framework to respond to Iranian military support for Russia

The Member States of the European Union have adopted this Thursday a new framework of sanctions to curb Iran’s military support for Russia in the context of the invasion of Ukraine.

The new regime bans the export of components from the EU to Iran of components used in the manufacture of drones and applies sanctions against individuals responsible for Iran’s unmanned vehicle program.

This framework complements the three previously adopted sanctions packages against drone-related individuals and entities, the latest of which in February 2023.

Similarly, the Twenty-seven have agreed to sanction six Iranians in two existing sanctions plans for their support with drones for Russia in the war in Ukraine and for Syria with anti-aircraft defense systems.

Those sanctioned are subject to a freeze on their assets in the EU and are prohibited from entering or transiting through territories of the European Union.
