Ecuador: Lasso suffers fibula fracture, will undergo surgery

Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso suffered a fall that caused him to fracture his left fibula, an injury that requires surgical intervention, the presidential press office said on Friday.

This is the third intervention that Lasso, a 67-year-old former banker, has undergone since he took office in May 2021.

“This morning, President Guillermo Lasso Mendoza had a fall that caused him to fracture his fibula,” the presidential Communications Secretariat said in a statement. “The left fibula fracture requires immediate intervention.”

The president’s agenda and the visits scheduled for Friday in the coastal province of Manabí were suspended.

The president said his activities “would resume as soon as possible,” the statement added, without elaborating.

In June 2021, Lasso underwent medium-complexity spinal surgery in the United States to remove a cyst in the lower back and improve his mobility. In August of last year, he underwent preventive treatment in Houston, since a melanoma was removed from his lower right eyelid.
