Corozal repeats the dose to Caguas and takes a 2-0 lead in the women’s volleyball final

The Pinkin de Corozal were placed halfway to end the reign of the Criollas de Caguas, after scoring their second consecutive victory tonight in the final series of the Women’s Senior Volleyball League to take a 2-0 lead.

Corozal defended his home, the Carmen Zoraida Figueroa field, with a score of 25-18, 25-19 and 28-26.

In that third set, Corozal was down 19-24, but was able to come back against six-time champions who have lost all six sets in this final. The Pinkin, in fact, scored their fourth straight victory over the Criollas, as they had also won both games in the regular season.

“We have been working hard. Caguas is an excellent team and they are used to coming back when they are down, and they have the experience of being in finals. We never underestimate any opponent. We always go in to give our best and following the plan of the coaching staff every night, every game”, expressed after the game Dulce Maria Tellez, who scored 11 points, six of them in blocks of the 20 made by Corozal.

“The key was to keep the nerve. We knew that moments like this were going to come, of being down, because Caguas will always play their game. At each point let’s prepare to get out of there, and keep the same focus. We have the tools, and if we are in the finals, it is because we can compete with a team of this caliber”, Tellez added.

In addition to Tellez, Payton Cafrey was the best scorer for the Pinkin with 15 points, five on blocks and six on direct services. Brittany Abercrombie had 14 points and 10 defenses, and Ronika Santos had nine points, five on blocks.

For Caguas, Karina Ocasio scored 12 points, 11 from Adore Anae, Diana Reyes with seven, four in blocks, and seven from Pilar Victoria.

The third game of the final series will be on Wednesday at the Marcelo Trujillo Panisse Coliseum in Humacao, home of the Criollas in this final.

“We know that they will continue to make their adjustments, and so will we. This is not over, they are going to come stronger, and we have to prepare for the onslaught that is to come. I understand that we are ready”, concluded Tellez.
