Finally, the NHL’s forward-thinking general managers took a look in the rearview mirror.
It took the NHL defenseman 16 years to be traded to the first main lineback at the deadline.
Boston general manager Dan Sweeney, who played more than 1,000 games on the blue line, traded for newly acquired defenseman Dimitri Orlov from Washington on Thursday night.
The first three big names traded were center Bo Horvat (Islanders), right wing Vladimir Tarasenko (Rangers) and center Ryan O’Reilly (Toronto). For all the teams in the Eastern Conference, by the way. Like Orlo.
How the best team in the NHL, in the midst of one of the NHL’s all-time greatest seasons with an .816 point percentage, could be any better remains a mystery.
But the Bruins’ not. The No. 1 defense adds a Stanley Cup-winning defenseman with 74 games of playoff experience.
Orlov didn’t even make it to TSN’s weekly commercial bait list because he wasn’t available before he was traded.
He wasn’t expected to be the first notable defenseman, as Arizona’s Jacob Sigrun (No. 3) and Columbus’ formerly linked Bruins’ Vladislav Gavrikov (No. 4) dominated the top five spots on TSN’s list.
But they remain off the ice and in limbo for “trade-related reasons.”
San Jose’s Timo Meyer remains No. 1, where he has made his permanent residence, while Chicago’s Patrick Kane went from No. 8 to No. 2.
Kane has seven goals and 10 points in his last four games.
The future Hall of Famer was publicly disappointed that the Rangers acquired Tarasenko, but DSN’s Darren Dreger reported that the Rangers are looking at a third party to broker another deal.
Kane is in the final season of an eight-year, $10.5 million AAV contract.
So far, four major agreements (Horvat, Tarasenko, O’Reilly and Orlov) have included wage withholding, two of which (O’Reilly and Orlov) see Minnesota retain 50 percent of its AAV already reduced to the half as intermediary.
New to the TSN list this week are two of St. Louis’ three first-round picks. The Blues got the first offers of 2023 from Tarasenko and O’Reilly from the Rangers and Toronto, respectively.
