California wildfire deaths rise to four

Yreka, Calif.The authorities found two other lifeless bodies in the middle of the forest fires that plague the north of Californiabringing the death toll to four.

Rescuers found the two dead on Monday in two different residences along State Highway 96, one of the few access roads to the border area with Oregon.The Siskiyou County Police Department said in a statement.

“This brings the confirmed number of fatalities to four,” the report states. “At this time there is no one whose whereabouts are unknown.” No further details were immediately released.

The other two dead were found Sunday in a charred vehicle in the driveway of a home in the Klamath River community, authorities said. At the moment no further details were given.

“It’s really tragic to see a fire grow and move so fast that it basically consumes an entire community. And that’s what happened in Klamath River,” he said Tuesday. Mike Lindberyspokesman for the local fire department.

Franklin Thomas, a resident of the small town of Yreka, fled the home where he grew up on the edge of a California national forest. She arrived at a shelter with her daughter, her medicine, some clothes and shower sandals. Unlike many others, he learned that his house was still standing.

“Pray for us,” said Thom, 55.

More than 100 homes have burned since the McKinney Fire broke out last Friday. The rain helped a little in fighting the flames, but the fire was still out of control, authorities said.

That fire, at about 88 square miles, is the largest of several burning near the Klamath National Forest in Northern California. A smaller fire forced evacuations and road closures in the small community of Happy Camp. Other fires continue to burn across the western United States, threatening large numbers of homes.

In northwestern Montana, a fire that started Friday near the town of Elmo burned some structures, but officials said they don’t know at this time if there were homes among them. The fire spread across about 25 square miles on Tuesday, although it was 10% contained, officials said. Some residents had to leave the area on Monday when strong winds fanned the flames.

In Idaho, a fire has burned more than 85 square miles near the Salmon-Challis National Forest, threatening homes, mines and fishing centers.
