The European Commission has signed agreements this Monday with different platforms of local authorities with which it will disburse 50 million euros to support its role in developing policies that promote sustainable development at local and regional level.
“Local and regional governments and their associations are key for the EU in its external actions and in its role to achieve sustainable and inclusive development in a way that generates more opportunities for all and leaves no one behind”, assured the commissioner European Union for International Cooperation, Jutta Urpilainen, on the signatures with the associations of local entities.
Specifically, the agreement has been signed with the International Association of Francophone Mayors (AIMF), the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF), the Union of Cities (UCLG), Platforma (CEMR) and Local Governments and the Union of Cities and Local Governments for Africa (UCLGA).
The Finnish commissioner has also highlighted that apart from the 50 million signed with the agreements of this Monday, the EU supports local authorities within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals with nearly 500 million.
