The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, will begin a tour of Africa this Thursday that will take him to Mozambique, Kenya and Somalia, a trip that arrives in the midst of a security and food challenge due to the consequences of the war in Ukraine In the continent.

The visit of the head of European diplomacy represents an opportunity to strengthen cooperation ties with African partners in a new geopolitical context, his office said in a statement. The objective of the tour is to address the energy and food crisis and help peace and security on the continent, in addition to obtaining the support of these countries in the face of the conflict raised by Vladimir Putin with the invasion of Ukraine.

Mozambique will be the first stop on Borrell’s trip on Thursday. The country hosts an EU military training mission to combat jihadism in the north of the country and, in Maputo, he will meet with the president, Filipe Nyusi, and the foreign minister, Veronica Macamo.

The next day he will travel to the facilities of the EU military mission, a visit that he will make together with the Director General of the EU General Staff, Admiral Herve Blejean.

In this way, Borrell will visit Mozambique a few months after his first visit to the country was canceled in January due to a positive coronavirus in his closest team.

The head of Foreign Affairs of the EU will continue on Saturday in Kenya, where he will meet with the new president William Rutto, while the tour will conclude on Sunday in Somalia with meetings with President Hasan Mohamed and the heads of the EU missions: the naval operation Atalanta, the training mission in Somalia and the civilian EUCAP Somalia.
