The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, thanked his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu, on Saturday for the role played by Ankara in getting Russia to return to the indirect agreement with Ukraine for grain exports and fertilizers.

Russia left the agreement last week after denouncing a Ukrainian attack on the Crimean port of Sevastopol, but a diplomatic initiative mediated by Turkey, a great promoter of the agreement, facilitated Moscow’s return to the pact.

“I have appreciated Turkey’s role in defending the Black Sea Grains Initiative, to prevent food from becoming weapons and to address global food crises,” said Borrell after his meeting with Cavusoglu in the framework of the Forum Sir Bani Yas, in the United Arab Emirates.

On his Twitter account, the European diplomat explained that the meeting also covered “other issues of concern”, such as the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean, where Turkey and Greece are locked in a territorial dispute over the maritime exploitation of gas fields. .
