The president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, has resorted to an extraordinary decree to approve a total of 561 appointments within the Federal Police, something that is restricted in the three months prior to elections in accordance with the Brazilian electoral law.

The electoral law prohibits the appointment of a public servant at the federal and state levels in the three months prior to the first round and until the inauguration of the elected representatives, according to ‘O Globo’.

Thus, Bolsonaro has accepted a law that establishes that appointments can be approved if it is “necessary for the installation or urgent operation of essential public services.”

The General Secretariat of the Presidency of Brazil has released a statement in which it acknowledges that, despite the fact that electoral legislation does not allow appointments, these were necessary so as not to compromise the functioning of the Federal Police.

Bolsonaro and fellow former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, a candidate for the Workers’ Party, are running for the Brazilian presidential election on Sunday.

According to the polls, Lula continues to lead the polls, close to 50 percent and therefore the possibility of finishing the elections in the first round. For his part, Bolsonaro stands at 37 percent.
