The president of the United States, Joe Biden, opened his speech on the State of the Nation on Tuesday, the second he has given since he assumed the White House, expressing his desire to “work” with the Republican opposition, specifically, with the leader of the Lower House, Kevin McCarthy.
“Congressman, I don’t want to ruin your reputation, but I am impatient to work with you,” the president joked as he began his speech before both houses of Congress.
Biden further cited what he called progress in a post-pandemic economy and stressed that a bitterly divided Congress could overcome their differences.
“We are often told that Democrats and Republicans cannot work together. But in the last two years, we have proven the naysayers wrong,” Biden said. “To my Republican friends, if we were able to work together in the last Congress, there’s no reason we can’t work together and find consensus on important things in this Congress as well.”
The president is expected to address, for the first time before a bicameral session of a divided Congress, issues such as the economy, immigration, police violence and threats from China and Russia.
