MADRID, Sep. 21 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The President of the United States, Joe Biden, met this Wednesday with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Liz Truss, to reinforce the bilateral commitment on the Northern Ireland Protocol included in the Brexit agreements.
“We are both committed to protecting the achievements of the Good Friday Agreement in Northern Ireland,” Biden said at a press conference before the meeting, adding that other challenges are the war in Ukraine and Western tensions with China.
For his part, Truss has stressed that the United Kingdom seeks to work “more closely” with the United States, especially in sectors such as energy and economic security. “We face enormous challenges as autocracies seek to consolidate and increase their assertiveness around the world,” she has said.
In a subsequent statement from the British Government, the United Kingdom has reported that both leaders have condemned “the recent belligerent statements about Ukraine”, while agreeing to continue economic and military support for kyiv.
The White House has also highlighted that Biden has again expressed his condolences to Truss for the death of Elizabeth II, as well as his gratitude for the opportunity to pay his respects at the state funeral held on Monday.
The White House warned Truss in early September that any attempt to “undo” the Northern Ireland Protocol included in the Brexit deals would make it more difficult for the United States and the United Kingdom to seal a free trade agreement.
Biden stressed in his first telephone conversation with the British prime minister “the importance of reaching a negotiated agreement with the European Union”, after London presented the law in June that would unilaterally annul the Northern Ireland protocol.
On the other hand, within the framework of the constant meetings on the sidelines of the 77th United Nations General Assembly in New York, the US president has also met with the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, to work on climate change.
It must be remembered that in his opening speech at the UN General Assembly, Guterres assured that conflicts and humanitarian emergencies are spreading “without paying attention to them”, especially “the world crisis of the cost of living” and climate change.
