The Belarusian journalist Ekaterina Andreeva, who works for the television network Belsat, has been sentenced this Wednesday to another eight years in prison after being found guilty of “betraying the State of Belarus”, as indicated by the regional court of the city of Gomel.

The trial was held behind closed doors in a case of which few details have emerged since his legal team is subject to a strict confidentiality agreement, as reported by the channel itself on its website.

Her relatives have thus denounced that even they do not know the dimension of the charges imposed or what acts would have led Andreeva to be convicted of treason. The network’s deputy director, Beata Kasitska, has warned that Andreeva is in jail “only for being an independent journalist who has done her job.”

“She has been sentenced for telling the truth. We continue to hope that President (Alexander) Lukashenko’s regime will not last long, and that all those responsible for the destruction of human lives will be held accountable for what they have done,” he said.

He also stressed that “hundreds of innocent people are behind bars in the country.” “Let’s not forget them,” she added. Andreeva has already been imprisoned for a year and eight months.
